Sid Meier has stated that he plans on taking advantage of the popular social networking service Facebook to support a new entry into the Civilization franchise. Refering to it as the Civilization Network, Meier states ” the game will allow you to join together with your friends to create the worlds most powerful, richest, smartest, or just plain coolest civilization.”
More interesting, the game will exist in a fully persistent environment and be free for everyone. Meiers also said testers will be needed for a closed beta and the game is expected to be released in 2010.

I have never been interested in Facebook games and the few I have been exposed to struck me as nothing more than viral marketing tools. As a huge fan of the Civilization series I am very interested in the developement of this particular Facebook game. I have a lot of family and friends who, when asked, would claim that they do not play video games. It’s funny because when I log into Facebook I get updates in my newsfeed letting me know that these same people have reached a high score, found a black sheep, or did something else in one of these free games offered on Facebook. I do not expect a free Facebook game to contain the depth of Civ IV or Civ Rev but it would be a lot of fun to share the Civ experience with friends and family who, otherwise, would not play these games with me. For more updates on the Civilization Network you can join Cid Meiers Facebook page.
